"Mornings in Abita Springs"

The sun always seemed a little softer in Abita Springs, filtering through the pines with a golden haze that made the dew sparkle like sugar on the tall grass. Out here, down a quiet gravel road a few miles from the heart of town, life moved slower steady like the lazy flow of the Abita River.

On most mornings, I'd sit on the creaky porch swing with a chipped enamel mug full of strong chicory coffee, listening to the cicada's hum as the fog lifted from the fields. My neighbor’s rooster, a loud-mouthed thing named Red, would start his usual fuss, and I’d hear the distant sound of someone firing up a tractor.

Life in the country had its rhythms—chickens to feed, gardens to tend, the occasional water moccasin to chase off. But there was peace in it. The kind of peace that came from knowing the same dirt road you walked every day had been there for generations. From knowing your neighbors by name and by story. From hearing fiddle music drift from the town square on weekends and stopping by the Abita Brew Pub for a cold beer after a long, hot day.

Some folks said not much happened out here. But if you listened close, the land told its own stories—of thunderstorms rolling through like old gods, of cypress knees rising from bayous like secrets, and of the kind of quiet that fills your soul instead of leaving it empty.
