In Pearl River, the mornings start early—roosters crowing, dogs barking, and the smell of biscuits baking somewhere down the road. The air is thick with pine and humidity, and the gravel crunches under your boots just the same as it did fifty years ago.

My place sits on a patch of land just off Highway 41, tucked between pine woods and a slow-moving creek that feeds into the river. The porch sags a little in the middle, but it holds strong—same as everything else out here. You don’t throw things away in Pearl River. You patch ’em, repurpose ’em, or hand them down.
